Seminar: City of Conflict/Digital City

For anyone who took seminar last semester, or anyone who's interested! I thought this was a pretty cool project running in New York. It gives homeless people a voice through social technology. I'm still kind of unsure what the end goal is meant to be, but I think it's a great way to raise awareness anyways.

New Tech for Health - Guest Lecture

There is an open lecture this coming Monday (FEB. 28th) at 4:30pm. Bruce Fifield of Design Continuum will be giving a talk in the Architecture PIT. Be there!

Bruce Fifield

With his experience in the world of user insight and understanding of what really matters in the creation and delivery of ideal user experiences Bruce Fifield has been recognized for his achievements in design and received international awards which include; IDSA, IF, Red Dot, Medical Design Excellence Award and the Compasso D’oro. Prior to founding Studio Fifield, Bruce Fifield was a consultant to Olivetti Spa in the design and development of numerous award winning products for the office environment. Subsequently, Bruce Fifield was the Co-Founder of Design Continuum Italia where he provided strategic leadership for over 20 years. Bruce Fifield is a visiting professor at the Scuola Politecnica di Design and frequently holds lectures on the strategic link between good business and great design.

"The Mutato-Archive is a collection of non-standard fruits, roots and vegetables, displaying a dazzling variety of forms, colours and textures, that only reveal themselves when lawfully enforced standards cease to exist. The complete absence of botanical anomalies in our supermarkets has caused us to regard the consistency of produce presented there as natural. Produce has become a highly designed, monotonous product. We have forgotten, and in many cases never experienced, the way fruits, roots, and vegetables can actually look (and taste). The Mutato-Project serves to document, preserve and promote these last remainders of agricultural diversity."

Minh's Legacy

CIDSA organized a ski/snowboard trip to Mt Cascade last week. As you know, the main guys behind the event were Teddy and Minh from fourth year. This was also made possible with a bit of help from Stephen Field. Kudos to him. My camera batteries froze and died from the cold so I don't have many pictures. Thanks for all those who came out that day and I hope you guys had a lot of fun and not a lot of bruises! For those that did not make it, HA! You missed out! But please refer to the bottom of the page.

Autism Connects - Design for those with ASD

THE CHALLENGE
The “Autism Connects” technology and design competition challenges students to help individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to better connect with the world around them, and allow individuals who do not have ASD to better understand and connect with those who do.

Designers are asked to produce innovative technology-based solutions to assist individuals with ASD in their communications with others and, in doing so, to increase the public’s understanding of this unique and growing population. Design solutions should focus on improving communication on any of a number of levels: between individuals, within and between communities and their members, and among individuals without ASD so they can connect better with individuals who do.

We are planning a ski & snowboard trip up to Mont-Cascade for night skiing, Friday February, 11th. Meet in 1st year studio at 4:00PM, leave at 4:30PM, hill closes at 10PM.

We are expecting around 50 people. WE NEED DRIVERS if people would rather carpool then rent a bus.

BUS RENTAL (Fits 48 people, costs $500 or ~10.50 each)

*If a lot of people are renting equipment, might be better to carpool (people can pitch in money for gas). If we have a lot of boards and skiis going up, bus might be better.

Conductor (2011) by Alexander Chen.

Conductor turns the New York subway system into an interactive string instrument. Using the MTA's actual subway schedule, the piece begins in realtime by spawning trains which departed in the last minute, then continues accelerating through a 24 hour loop. The visuals are based on Massimo Vignelli's 1972 diagram.
