Carleton Solar Decathlon Team

You may have missed the first few meetings of the Carleton Solar decathlon team, but it's not too late to take part in this project. The team is working towards a concept to be entered in the 2013 competition, but the major design work is expected to be completed over the next few months.

What is the Solar Decathlon?
"The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency."

What is the project goal?
The team is looking to design a house that is marketable, aesthetically pleasing, efficient, and cost effective.

What do they want from us?
Ideas. Insights. The team in charge of this is comprised of engineers, and they are looking to ID and Architecture students for help in developing the concept during the early stages. If you know anything about solar power, passive solar heating, architecture, small-space living, energy saving design, etc, etc, etc, we want your input.

The next meeting is during the first week of January, and they are looking for students to bring concepts work or research done over the break. The plan is for a full-fledged concept by the end of January, so things are moving very super fast.

If you have any questions you can email the team directly at: eric_ma_@hotmail.com or speak to Nat Overholtzer or Anthony Dewar in 3rd year.

What's your score?

Kid Cudi - Up up & Away

How About a Semester 2 Project With Nicholas Cage as Your Muse?

Mousse Script by Sudtipos

Federico Díaz

Free Half Baked Idea

SITE: Naples, Italy.
DESIGN PROBLEM: All this garbage and seemingly nowhere to put it.

From where do we approach this problem? Improving infrastructure through government? Encourage decreased consumption among the population?

Who are we designing for? Government? Citizens? Tourists? Wildlife? The environment?

What are the causes for the problem? Lack of funding? Ineffective policy? The wastefulness of humanity in general?

How can design help improve daily life on a small scale while policy helps fix the problem on a large scale?

Recently Read: Austin Howe - Designer's Don't Read

Austin Howe - Designer's Don't Read
Carleton Library Call # : NK1510 .H69 2009 (Floor 3)

A bunch of essays regarding (graphic) design practice. Howe stresses the importance of designing for the client's needs, working with advertising and marketing execs, being willing to defend a great design and learning from examples of successful firms.

2/5

CON
-More targeted to graphic designers.
-Very limited insights.
-Some essays are written terribly.

CON?
-Incredibly pretentious.

PRO
-Quick read.
-A lot of (attractive) people look at you on the bus if you read it in such a way that the cover is in full view of half the passengers. Especially in the Glebe. For example:
