2012 internship opening - designaffairs

designaffairs has openings for a 6month internship starting Feb/March 2012. But you know what that means... six months later, the spot will open up and you can intern there! They also have several branch studios and is an interdisciplinary firm that covers aspects of design strategy, industrial design, branding, user interface design, and moooore.

The requirement says the internships are for highly motivated and top notch students that are in the 5th semester. I have no idea what 5th semester is, so just apply anyway if you think you meet the former criteria haha.

Industrial design (Feb/Mar 2012) - Munich, Erlangen
User interface (Feb/Mar 2012) - Munich
Usability (Mar/Apr 2012) - Munich

good luck!

2nd Year Studio: Reusable Water Bottles

Second year students have been working hard on their first studio project of the semester; designing a reusable water bottle for a specific user group of their choosing. Completed in four stages -- identifying use scenarios, creating concept sketches, low fidelity prototyping, and making final visual appearance models -- the class developed products for a wide range of uses. See a handful of projects after the jump, and don't forget to check out some of the finished models in the display case near fourth year studio.

Trunk Swap 2.0

Hey guys, it's Trunk Swap time again! In case you didn't come to the last one, prepare for delicious food, awesome trades, prof donations, and chill music or maybe a movie in the background :)

There are a few ways to do this:
 1. You bring old stuff you don't want anymore (clothes, small items, big items .. stuff you'd sell at a garage sale) and trade / sell them to other people who will love them more.

 2. Bring art / design / other work that you'd like to sell (or trade) so we can support our own! (please contact us, if there is enough interest we can reserve a separate space for your work!)

 3. Bring delicious food! Please contact Sam M or Zoe D in first year to organize if you'd like CIDSA to make the profit off your food! :D

 4. Just show up, browse, and hope that people will accept cold hard cash (they will!)

 5. Any combination of the above! We'd love it if you came, the more the merrier!

2012 internship opening - teams design

Teams design has offices in Essingen, Germany, Shanghai, Chicago, and Hamburg. They do a wide range of products from electronics to housewares, transportation and healthcare.

The openings are for Fall 2012, but I suggest you apply early because they get a lot of applicants. I got feedback from them one time ago, and they really appreciate seeing thought process through sketching, mock ups etc. You could even just do one or two projects showing the design process and that would be enough.

Industrial design - Essingen, Chicago
Interactive design - Essingen
Transportation design intern - Hamburg

good luck!

You just wrinkled my brain

I kind of missed the Valentine's day mark... but this is quite interesting (and yes, cute too), for all you psych nerds out there. Watch it just so you can quote this line in daily life:

"Love is a feeling you have for someone you have feelings about."

2012 Internship opening - pilotfish

Pilotfish is a fairly large company that mixes industrial design with interaction design and specializes in electronic products. They have branches in Munich, Amsterdam and Taipei, and they work with many international brands. Check them out here.

They currently have openings for Munich and Taipei as an interactive design intern or an industrial design intern. Two positions both available in both locations. (it says so on the website)

I'm not sure when the positions are for, but it's always good to just shoot them an email!
good luck!

Internship on Ice

Last November, I packed my backs and travelled to the dark edge of the Arctic Circle to intern for three months as a “Product Designer” at a fashion studio in Reykjavík, Iceland. I worked with designer Sruli Recht, an Australian ex-pat who operates a studio he lovingly calls Vopnabúriđ (Icelandic for “The Armoury”) in the city’s old harbour. Sruli’s self-titled label could be best described as avant-garde, high end menswear – the collections usually offer a gradient of wearable clothing to wild show pieces. I was invited to come aboard his 2012 Autumn/Winter collection development team to assist in the creation of accessories and show pieces.

Now comes a new era of 'shopping. Don't overdo it!

Roadtrip

If you haven't been to this little gem in the market, 24 York St., I highly recommend it!  But let's not all rush at once ladies, we'll all have the same dresses for YED...awkward.

Last Friday, they hosted a stylist challenge.  The grand prize being $200 gift certificate (nice) and you get to style their Spring 2012 photoshoot (AWESOME!)  ID's very own graduate, Rachel Bussin, was all up in this shiz.  So hop on facebook, like her ensemble, and help her win!  See link below.

Blog Feature: Intellective Design

Follow along with Carleton MDes student Mike Gigoriev as he completes his masters Thesis.

"This blog is the documentation of my exploration into the potential of harnessing collective intelligence in the design process to foster greater empathy and understanding in social design initiatives."

The blog is full of great content pertaining to Industrial Design. Make sure to check it out here.

T-shirt Time!

It's that time of year again! Shirts are on sale until Friday, February 17! We have two awesome designs this year! All I can say is YESSSSS....

YESSS.... Someone's finally done it: Taken all of our beloved viral videos and designed movie posters for them. Simple graphics and heavy on the Helvetica, but it works and they're cute. More here.

Ottawa: City of the Future - Today!

Okay, so not quite today, but soon. If you know me, you know I take a great interest in city planning, urban design, architecture, and transit. So I thought I'd share some major projects underway in the city in which all of us study, and some of us call home. Here we go...

Big things are happening in Ottawa, and I'm excited. I can only hope the situation in my own hometown becomes more clear and promising.

So you want to graduate

Curious to know what it's like to be in fourth year? Wait no longer! It’s Hell. Please disregard the blur and smiling faces.

I’m kidding (mostly), but you should come see for yourself.

Fourth years are in the midst of user testing and WE WANT YOU to come help us out. Check out our projects, our test rigs, and tell us what you really think. Maybe you will get an idea of what type of project you'd like to work on in the future.

Friday @ 5pm in the Pit or Wednesday @ 12 noon around studio. Questions? Come find Kim Thomson in the 4th yr studio.

More specific information of what we’re actually up to after the jump.

Dream Tesselation

By Joel Cooper, this particular tessellation is driving me crazy. Wish I had the skills for this one.
