ID Invades Milieux

A few ID Student's decided to construct an Installation for this year's Kosmic Event, now entitled Milieux. We thought we'd try to help them fill the huge venue, and show everyone what us ID kids can do. Due to the huge space we decided that a large scale installation was the only way to go. 
This year's theme was Apocalypse/ Resurrection. Following this theme, we drew our inspiration from the recent floods in Pakistan which forced all of the spiders in the area to relocate into nearby trees. As a result of this migration, all of the tree tops became cocooned in spider webs. 
Twenty yards of Fabric, sixty 2x4s, 300 screws, 1400 square feet of synthetic spider webs, the branches of many trees and lots of manhours later five large trees (about 10 feet tall and 10 feet wide) were constructed to fill the space. Thanks to the lighting systems installed each tree was lit from a spotlight above and cycled through a variety of colors. 
We're super happy with how the installation turned out. Special thanks to our awesome team of Jon Cairns, Vince Caston-Rumebe, Jorge Hernan Correa, Ben Miller, Laura Moor and Michelle Zheng and everyone else who helped us along the way!

Trunk Swap Recap

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Trunk Swap last week! Food was eaten, laughs were had, and many a thing was swapped. Perhaps we should host another near the end of next semester?

NEW View from My Window

1 Dec 2011 - Day one of my new internship.

On my first day, they already had my cutting up foam for some mock-ups of throw cushions to test different sizes. Today, my task is to go to Sham Sui Po, an area with an open air fabric market, to pick out fabric samples for said pillows. I'm really, really, really dying of excitement here!!

There's a picture of the view that looks onto a park (!), as well as some shots of the showroom below the office.

The snow has arrived at Carleton! Since the 3rd years' class was cancelled on the first snow of the year we decided some good old fashioned recess was in order! A few wet feet and frozen hands later, everyone was feeling preeeeetty satisfied with how today has turned out.

21 Nov 2011 - Week 3 of my internship.

I'm just starting my third week here, and I'm beginning to get more projects. There is no looming deadline at the moment for our projects, so we are all taking it very easy. Actually, my coworker just left after lunch and I have the afternoon off now.  It's kind of weird like that.

So I got off the subway today and I turned around and saw this. I definitely did a "HA," out loud and snapped a pic to share with you guys. Weird, because I've been getting off at this station for a week now and this is the first time I've seen it.

A geometric and ergonomic knife designed by Lebedev Studio, their form exploration and process leading up to the final design is pretty interesting... take a look.

Nature is Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint is releasing a few special coins with graphics that can best be described as "very cute". They celebrate Canada's glorious nature and Parks Canada's centennial. It's too late to order the absolutely delightful looking loonies, but the toonie is currently available. Best of all, they're pretty much free!
